Artificial intelligence is increasingly shaping how people work, make decisions, and interact with information across healthcare, government, workplaces, and everyday digital systems. As these technologies become more integrated into daily life, questions around transparency, trust, fairness, and human oversight continue to grow in importance.

In this webinar, Dr. Harmanpreet Kaur will share insights from her research on human-centered artificial intelligence and explainable AI. The presentation will explore how people understand and interact with AI systems through a socio-technical lens. Dr. Kaur will share ways in which AI outputs are explained to people for improving decision-making, highlighting how biases can persist regardless of explanations. She will discuss why people may over-rely on automated tools in time-constrained decision-making environments, outlining facets of human cognition that affect AI use. This webinar will examine approaches for designing AI tools that better support thoughtful and accountable collaboration between people and intelligent technologies.

Presenter Bio

Harmanpreet Kaur, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Minnesota and a member of the GroupLens Research Lab. Her research focuses on human-centered AI, explainability and interpretability, and human-AI collaboration. Her work examines how people understand AI systems and how intelligent technologies can be designed to better align with human needs, values, and decision-making processes.
