In the fall of 2023, Hennepin County Environment and Energy started a collaborative project through HUP to produce a toolkit, Project Manager’s Guide to Material Reuse in Commercial Buildings, with architectural specification language for owners, architects and contractors looking to design, build and operate buildings with less waste by building with reclaimed materials and by implementing deconstruction. In partnership with the University of Minnesota's Center for Sustainable Building Research, MSR Design, and Doors Unhinged, the project team conducted a literature review of existing resources, created a toolkit with best practices for sourcing and installation of reclaimed building materials, developed specification language templates, and held stakeholder feedback sessions for expert input. This webinar session will discuss the need for increased material reuse in commercial building projects, describe the approach to this collaborative project, and provide an overview of the content in the Project Manager’s Guide to Material Reuse in Commercial Buildings toolkit.
